Filmscreening and Q&A of “Scarlet Ribbon”

March 27 @ 18:15 - 20:00

The filmscreening with Naomi Beukes-Meyer is part of the Namibian and Southern African Studies Research Colloquium by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien, the Centre for African Studies, University of Basel, and the University of Namibia.

A road trip leads to revealing unspoken truths between two women. In this short film, the Namibian film maker Naomi Beukes provides an intimate look into one of the reasons for the devastating femicide that is shocking Namibia day by day: “We are who we are, SURVIVORS”.

Previous shorts of Naomi Beukes include “What to do with the Silence”, in which she addresses the issue of domestic violence. Gender-based violence in Namibia and elsewhere and the visibility of queer Women of Colour is a pivotal theme throughout all her works. Her short film “The Wind on your Skin”, shot with the local lesbian community, let to numerous awards and nominations throughout festivals in Europe. Naomi Beukes currently lives and works in Germany and will be present during the screening in Basel.
