Gaerdes, Fritz and Anna Marie

by Celine Graber

The German teacher and entomologist Fritz Gaerdes (1892-1975) lived in Namibia as of 1921. Carl Schlettwein stayed with him and his wife, the Namibian-born Anna Marie Schlettwein (1899-1990) when working in Okahandja in the late 1950s. Fritz Gaerdes bequested papers, manuscripts and photographs to the BAB, making it the BAB’s first accessible Personal Archive (PA.1). Carl Schlettwein edited a Festschrift for Gaerdes in 1972 entitled ‘Impulse eines Landes extremer Bedingungen für die Wissenschaft’.
