Song “Jackal’s Dance” Sound documents play a central role in recording oral texts and memories. From 1953 to 1954, married couple Ernst and Ruth Dammann recorded over 800 songs and stories, in numerous African languages, in South-West Africa, and photographed the performers, including four women in Omaruru who performed the so-called jackal’s dance in Otjiherero. Sound collections in the BAB archive primarily consist of extensive interview collections from journalists, researchers and organisations. In addition, there are recordings of musical performances and cultural events, press conferences and political speeches. Many audiotapes and audiocassettes were used by researchers or journalist in the course of their research. The majority of the recordings were made in southern Africa. However, there are also many interviews and conferences with African interlocutors that were recorded in Europe or elsewhere. In recent years, a large portion of the sound collection was digitised and catalogued with the help of the association Memoriav. For those interested, MP3 files can be listened to on the BAB premises. For further information: |
