Y/our Colonial Gaze
What do pictures know? Which perspective do I take, as a white male subject, when entering such an exhibition?’ In the exhibition ‘Y/our Colonial Gaze’, a joint project by the BAB Archives and students from the University of Basel, the curators consciously avoided exhibiting colonial images in a determinative, definitive and unambigous manner. Instead, they asked viewers to re-arrange the images and text panels. They opted for an active engagement and experience of the public – each change in the arrangement of colonial photographs changed the perspective of the viewers and the complexity of the topic.
