General

The Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB) library is a reference library. Books and journals can only be consulted on the premises of the BAB. The library holdings are complemented by the archive collections of the BAB (photographic archive, journals archive, poster collection etc.), use of which is covered by the archive's regulations.

The library is open from Tuesday to Friday, from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. For large projects requiring extensive research, notification in advance is recommended. Library materials cannot be ordered during the lunch break from 1.00 to 2.00 p.m., but the reading room is open to visitors during this period.

Access to the library may be restricted or refused.

Use of the library

Visitors must first go to the reception and deposit any bags and coats there. On their first visit, a member of the library staff will show the visitor how the catalogue works. Books and journals need to be ordered with a lending slip. Users may not take books from the shelves. Only the journals displayed in the reading room may be consulted without having to be ordered beforehand.

There are no records for the holdings in the Rare-Book Collection in the General Catalogue. Users who wish to consult the Rare-Book Collection are requested to contact Antonio Uribe for an appointment (au(at)baslerafrika.ch).

Up to 15 books and/or journals can be put to one side for consultation on another day. These books can be deposited together with the lending slip filled in by the user on a designated shelf in the reading room.

Every care must be taken when handling books and journals. In the event of any damage, the user will be held responsible for the costs of repair or replacement.

Photocopies from books and journals may be made on the premises of the BAB. One A4 copy costs 10 Rappen, a double-sided or A3 copy costs 20 Rappen. Books with the shelf-mark R or A as well as valuable or fragile materials either cannot be photocopied, or only with certain restrictions.
