In Namibia und in Südafrika haben nach Beginn der Unabhängigkeit und nach dem Ende der Apartheid die ehemaligen Befreiungsbewegungen South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) und der African National Congress (ANC) nach demokratischen Wahlen die Regierung übernommen. In ihrem Vortrag vergleicht Silke Isaak (Universität Hamburg) die ANC und die SWAPO als Befreiungsbewegungen und als Regierungsparteien. Der Vortrag in den BAB findet im Rahmen des Tuesday Research Seminar in African History Spring/Frühling 2013 statt. The annual meeting of the European Librarians in African Studies (ELIAS) will be held in Basel on Friday 11 May 2012. The meeting will focus on two issues that any library and/or archive in African Studies will be concerned with: current and changing acquisition strategies and collection policies. Not being based in Africa, these strategies and policies need to take account of the changing (research) environments in Europe and Africa. At the same time, the role of libraries and archives and of librarians and archivists are changing fast in today’s digital age.

Prof. Dr. Oliver Ruppel ist Professor of Law an der Universität Stellenbosch, Südafrika. Bis 2010 war er Direktor des Human Rights and Documentation Centre an der juristischen Fakultät der Universität Namibia in Windhoek, Zu seinen zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen zählen die von ihm mit herausgegebenen Bücher "Biodiversity and the Ancestors" (2008) und "Environmental Law and Policy in Namibia" (2011). Johann Müller (Arnold Bergsträsser Institut, Freiburg i.B.): The Makunda Refugees:   Early efforts to establish a Namibian liberation army in Botswana in the 1960s

 

In 1964, a group of 154 Namibians, among them Kuaima Riruako, the current paramount chief of the Ovaherero, attempted to leave South West Africa in order to receive military training abroad. Behind these plans were Hosea Kutako and the Herero Chief's Council and the UN petitioner Mburumba Kerina who had been expelled from SWAPO shortly before. Their intention was to pursue liberation efforts independent from SWAPO. Yet, as the move was poorly organised the group stranded in western Botswana and created problems of all kinds in the then British protectorate Bechuanaland. The presentation will depict the implications of this quite spectactular movement of freedom fighters and will contextualise the incident with reference to Botswana's immigration policies and the handling of the "liberation issue" in Namibia's neighbouring country.

Hans Buser: Als Schweizer Kaufmann in Ghana  Apéro and music with André Buser

 

In 1956 Hans Buser for the first time travelled to Ghana as an employee of the Basler Union Trading Company. The success merchant became friend with many people crucial to leading Ghana into independence under President Kwame Nkrumah. For this book, Hans Buser and the journalist Ruedi Suter brought memories and histories together and illustrated them with personal photographies.

The seminar is part of an ongoing inquiry into change and persistence concerning gender in relation to global transformations processes. It examines current trends related to sex, gender and politics in South Africa and India. Participants are encouraged to discuss similarities and differences within the present global constellation of two countries that were once part of the same British empire and that continue to maintain significant ties with each other. The seminar introduces participants to specific social and political practices in these two countries and stimulates debate on the implications of these in terms of gender justice.

Posters are designed to act. They moblise people, create citizens and consumers, shape public space and memory. In this richly illustrated volume the action of posters is analysed and documented historically for one African country: Namibia. The volume is the result of a Namibian-Swiss co-operation in research, documentation and collecting. The essays by scholars from both countries consider the extent to which public visuals were distributed, displayed, seen and appropriated in the context of campaigns of persuasion, protest and resistance. The Photographic Poster Archive included in this book documents and reveals a century of contested visuality which shaped the visual communication of Namibia. Dr. Bettina Richer, curator of the poster collection of the Museum of Design Zurich, will talk about the visuality and internationality of posters. Stories feed the heart, mind and spirit. This workshop shows how to use writing, story-telling, symbols and creative modalities such as words, pictures, clay, paper plates, found objects to tell and elicit stories.

Michael Pröpper (MA), Institute of Social Anthropology: Illegal forest logging and poverty in Kavango (Namibia)  Introduction and presentation of the ethnographic awareness film "Wiza Wetu! Our Forest!"

 

Michael Pröpper introduces a project and a film on the problem and complexity of illegal logging in one of the few remaining forest in Namibia. The film, produced by Michael Pröpper, Martin Gruber and Roberth Mukuya under the auspic es of BIOTA (Biodiversity Monitoring Transect Analysis în Africa), investigates backgrounds and presents exemplary community-based forestry projects. It was recently launched in Namibia. Michael Pröpper is a PhD researcher on cultural dimensions and utilisation strategies of biodiversity. John Liebenberg ist einer der herausragenden Fotografen des südlichen Afrika. Seine Fotografien der Kriege in Angola, Namibia und Zaire finden sich in den 1980er und 90er Jahren auf den Titelseiten der großen westlichen Magazine und Zeitungen. Nach dem Ende der Kriege wendet sich Liebenberg stärker als zuvor der Portrait- und Landschaftsfotografie zu.

The historian Patricia Hayes (University of the Western Cape) reflects in her presentation on the importance of the photographs of John Liebenberg (Johannesburg) for Namibian and South African history of the 1980's.
