The library contains around 20'000 books and subscribes to about 200 journals on southern Africa.

Extensive holdings on Namibia form the core of the library collections. The titles cover a vast range of disciplines and themes. Monographs and periodicals from the German colonial period can be found alongside historical, sociological and natural science works which are collected as completely and maintained as up-to-date as possible. The holdings also include literary works published in or related to Namibia, and an exceptional collection of grey literature, school books, publications from Namibian public authorities and government agencies, along with literature in African languages.

The other countries in southern Africa — Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Swaziland — are covered by the purchase of standard works.

Bibliographies for the entire African continent together with a rare-book collection containing Africana since the 16th century extend the conceptional framework of the library.

The journals collection contains academic periodicals, information bulletins from African Studies centres, popular magazines and newspapers from southern Africa.

The Hans W. Debrunner Library is a Closed Collection of books whose main emphasis is on western Africa, mission history and the African diaspora.

The BAB Library is a reference library: books and journals may only be consulted on the premises of the BAB.

Opening times: Tuesday–Friday 10:00–13:00/14:00–17:00

Interlibrary loans are not possible. A research and reading room and a photocopier are available for library users.

Library holdings — with the exception of the rare-book collection — can be searched via our internet catalogue
